Measure the Room

LENGTH WIDTH Ø ?
(Length + Width) × 4 = Diameter

Measurements in feet → Result in inches

Example
Room 13ft × 16ft → (13 + 16) × 4 = 36 inches diameter
2

At What Height?

30-36 in min 7ft
Above the table: 30-36 inches from the surface
Open space: minimum 7 feet from the floor
💡

High ceiling? Add 3 inches of chain for every extra foot above the standard 9ft ceiling.

3

Above the Table

Table width ½ - ⅔ of table
Chandelier diameter = ½ - ⅔ of table width
Example
Table Ø 48 in → Chandelier 24-32 inches

Long rectangular table? Consider two smaller chandeliers or a linear fixture ½ - ⅔ the length of the table.

Special Cases

Stairways and High Ceilings

Stairways and double or triple-height spaces are the perfect opportunity for a dramatic chandelier. Here you can go bold with impressive sizes and vertical development.

Chandelier height ⅓ of the ceiling height
Position Centered in the stairwell
Distance from steps Min. 6.5 ft from highest point
💡

Cascading or multi-tiered chandeliers are ideal: they visually accompany the descent of the stairs.

Entryway and Foyer

The entryway is your home's calling card. An impactful chandelier immediately sets the right atmosphere and communicates the style of your home.

9ft ceiling Chandelier max 20-24 in height
10ft+ ceiling You can go up to 32-40 in
Narrow hallway Prefer vertical development

Choose a statement piece: it's the first thing your guests will notice when entering.

Bedroom

In the bedroom, lighting should be warm and relaxing. Choose soft shapes and warm light, avoiding overly imposing chandeliers above the bed.

Above the bed Flush mount or subtle pendant
Minimum height 6.5 ft from mattress
Light temperature 2700K - 3000K (warm)
🌙

Consider a dimmer to adjust the intensity based on the time of day.

Chain or Direct Mount?

The ceiling height determines how to hang your chandelier. Here's how to choose:

Direct Mount

Ceilings up to 9ft

  • Maximum headroom
  • Clean, modern look
  • Ideal for flush mounts

With Chain

Ceilings over 9ft

  • Adjustable height
  • Dramatic effect
  • Perfect above tables
Chain length = Ceiling height − 7ft − Chandelier height
Example
10ft ceiling, 20in chandelier → 120 − 84 − 20 = 16 inches of chain
